The Cognitive Abilities Test™ (CogAT®) Form 7 assesses the level and pattern of cognitive development of students from Prep to Year 12, measuring general and specific reasoning abilities in three domains (verbal, quantitative and nonverbal). Because these abilities are closely related to an individual's success in school, CogAT results are helpful in planning effective instructional programs and adapting instruction to enhance students' chances of success in learning.

The CogAT Research and Development Guide summarises the development, standardisation and test construction procedures (including selecting and weighting samples, collecting standardisation data, establishing national norms and gathering validity evidence) for the CogAT Form 7. The Guide covers all levels (5/6-17/18).

This guide can be used by teachers to understand their options and make informed decisions.

The guide covers:

  • How to Use the Guide
  • Nature and Purpose of CogAT
  • Test Development
  • National Standardisation (US)
  • Scaling and Norming
  • Reliability
  • Validity
  • Fairness
  • Equivalence of Forms
  • Descriptive Statistics and Item Analysis
  • National Standardisation Participants
