Purpose: Assist in the identification of children who qualify for the special education category of emotional disturbance based on federal criteria

Age Range: 5-18 years

Time: Approximately 15-20 minutes

Administration: Individual or group

The first instrument of its kind to provide a standardised approach to the assessment of emotional disturbance (ED), the Emotional Disturbance Decision Tree (EDDT) encompasses all the federal criteria and addresses the broad emotional and behavioural nuances of children who may require special education services for ED.

The federal criteria referred to is from the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations and the reauthorisation of IDEA (2004), and mandates that certain conditions be present in order to receive services but don’t provide assessment guidelines.

The EDDT includes five sections that correlate with the specific components of the federal criteria, enabling you to work through each criterion one by one. • Emotional Disturbance Characteristics scales include:
  • Inability to Build or Maintain Relationships
  • Inappropriate Behaviors or Feelings
  • Pervasive Mood/Depression
  • Physical Symptoms or Fears
  • EDDT Total Score

In addition, two cluster scores are derived from this section: the Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Cluster and Possible Psychosis/Schizophrenia Cluster.

The EDDT-PF (Parent Form) is also available.
