Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (KABC-II)

Author(s): Alan S Kaufman and Nadeen L Kaufman

Publisher: AGS 2004

Purpose: To measure intelligence/cognitive ability

Candidates: 3-18 years of age

Administration: Core Battery (Luria model): 25-55 minutes, Core Battery (CHC model): 35-70 minutes - Individual

Content: The KABC-II measures cognitive ability and was developed using a dual theoretical foundation. The Luria model focuses on cognitive processing and deemphasises acquired knowledge. The Cattel/Horn/Carroll (CHC) model includes the four scales in the Luria system, plus a fifth scale to measure Crystallized Ability (Gc).The dual model approach allows examiners to select the interpretive system consistent with the reason for referral or child's background.

In addition, the KABC-II includes a nonverbal option that allows the examiner to assess a child whose verbal skills are severely limited. The KABC-II provides insights into how a child receives and processes information, helping pinpoint cognitive strengths and weaknesses.

Additionally, fully normed and validated supplemental subtests are offered to allow hypothesis testing.
