ASK-KIDS Inventory for Children

Aspects of Self-knowledge About Activities

Author(s): Dr L J Bornholt

Publisher: ACER Press, 2005

The ASK-KIDS Inventory for Children provides a profile of children's self-concepts in relation to a diverse set of physical, cognitive and social activities.

A wide range of professionals can administer the ASK-KIDS profiles, including counsellors, clinicians, social workers, psychologists and health professionals, as well as researchers who work with children in clinical and educational settings.

ASK-KIDS is a unique and engaging inventory for both pre-school and school-age students from 4 to 12 years old, and can be completed in approximately fifteen minutes. It includes self-concepts in ten areas:

  • reading
  • number
  • drawing
  • friends
  • communication
  • individuality
  • belonging
  • movement
  • body
  • appearance

Simple diagrams of the activities provide a frame of reference for each of the self-concepts that are indicated by children's responses to five direct questions. Children's responses are recorded using a simple one-to-five dot-point scale. Their responses form reliable profiles of self-concepts across the ten activities. The materials are designed so that ASK-KIDS can be extended to other activities.
